I don’t want to make sweeping pronouncements this early in 2010, but I was just debating which Rock and Roll Hotel show to use my LivingSocial coupon at, and, welp, holy shit. March is going to be friggin’ epic for liveĀ music in DC. (Presumably, many of these bands are stopping by on their way to/from SXSW, but I don’t know that for sure.) Let’s consider the possibilities after the jump.
March 5 – Sondre Lerche w/ JBM @ Rock and Roll Hotel
Sondre typically plays larger venues like The Birchmere or the 9:30 Club when passing through DC, so I’m amped to see him in a much more intimate setting. Even if his music didn’t make me consider giving up my pessimistic and cynical ways, I’d still want to go see him be charming as all get-out.
March 6 – Cymbals Eat Guitars w/ Bear in Heaven, Freelance Whales @ Rock and Roll Hotel
If someone can explain to me why the Freelance Whales, who have sold out both of their most recent DC/NOVA shows, are the first openers on this bill, I will give you a York Peppermint Patty (sorry, I haven’t been to the grocery store in a while). Mikey loves Cymbals Eat Guitars, and their album “Why There Are Mountains” was favorably reviewed approximately everywhere, so I’ll buy them as headliners. I haven’t listened to Bear in Heaven, but I hope they have the chops to stand up to two of the buzziest buzz bands on the entire internet.
March 11 – The Morning Benders w/ Miniature Tigers, Acrylics @ Black Cat
AAAH! AAAAH!! Those are excited screams. I’m going to tell the Miniature Tigers about the time I heard Mikey singing “Tell It To The Volcano” and “Mamma Mia” in the shower.
March 13 – Here We Go Magic w/ April Smith and the Great Picture Show, Glass Ghost @ Rock and Roll Hotel
You guys, April Smith is amazing. She is about two feet tall. She has a voice for musical theater and an ear for love songs with a jazzy, big band sound. Here We Go Magic have the advantage of being a band I’ve heard of from a few different places, so probably they are good?? But this show is really all about April, for me.
March 16 – Wes Tucker @ Vermilion
I don’t think I can afford to eat here, but I’m going to encourage going to this show until Wes adds a show in DC proper, or one at Evening Star. I really like fish tacos.
March 22 and 23- Spoon w/ Deerhunter @ Black Cat
I hope this one is good. I always confuse Deerhunter, Deer Hoof, and the Deer Ticks, but I also always hear good things about all of them. And Spoon, well, they’re Spoon. I’m excited to find out for myself whether they’re awesome or absolute shit live. I’ve heard both.
March 23 – Basia Bulat @ Iota
I don’t remember which night we have Spoon tickets, and I don’t think my ears will like seeing three shows in four nights, but my brain definitely likes this idea.
March 25 – Jukebox the Ghost w/ Tally Hall, Skybox @ Black Cat
March 26 – Beach House w/ Bachelorette @ Black Cat
Super disappointed I didn’t get a ticket to this. I make few exceptions to my “No fuzzy, atonal, washed-out, boring, shitty Brooklyn fuzzcore” rule, and Beach House are one of these exceptions.
POLL TIME, Y’ALL!
