Mikey Wins This Round: I’m super into this Freelance Whales song
by Katie
PREVIOUSLY ON MUSIC FOR MISANTHROPES, Michael called Pandora out for not recognizing the Freelance Whales, whose album doesn’t drop until March (womp womp, Mikey). I hoped in passing to catch them opening for Fanfarlo, only the show sold out before I got there. Also it was cold, so I wasn’t going to stand in line outside in case 40 people decided to leave; I went and played skee ball instead!
Anyway! They’re coming back to DC next week and I’m going to buy my ticket tonight. Why? Because of this song:
No, I’m not the girl in this video announcing “I’m in love with all of them.” But that’s only because I wasn’t there.
Haters tease me for liking the sound of a lot of people singing at once, but even Liz will admit that the harmonies on “Generator^1st Floor” are so tight, the five voices sound like fifty, and they’re so textured yet light, you could wrap yourself in that chorus and wear it like a summer dress. Then wear that dress to the Grand Canyon, stand at the bottom, and sing eh, eh, eh, and the echo might sound half as good as this.
Guys, that song sounds so good, if it were a blood-borne illness, I would be dead of it right now. (WTF?) They are playing in the damn SUBWAY STATION and I’ve got goosebumps.
I also want to give them props because singer Judah Dadone was GW Class of ’07 like meeeee, and now I feel like a chump for not ever seeing him play, when I remember his flyers being all over the place all the time. But #1 I wasn’t cool enough or #2 probably old enough, and #3 I did not think that was a dude’s actual name. Regrets!
Mikey does, however, lose the round where he tries to tell me that he hates Vampire Weekend. WHAT IS THAT?
Freelance Whales are headlining Backstage at the Black Cat next Thursday, January 21. Tickets $10, $12 at the door, which I only know because I looked it up right before I wrote this.
