Mystery Team: Amazing Movie and Apparently Good Luck

I’m sure you are all familiar with the amazing comedy team known as Derrick Comedy, and I’m sure you were all heartbroken when they stopped making videos for the internet in order to make a movie that people would maybe see eventually.  Lucky for me, that maybe eventually is NOW.

After years of waiting, Mystery Team came to New York for me and my former roommates Phil and Marcus to see.  After finding the theater hidden down a dark alley in the middle of a neighborhood, and settled down to watch the movie, we were greeted by possibly the most amazing cinematic experience of all time.

For those of you who don’t know, Mystery Team tells the story of Jason (the master of disguise), Duncan (the boy genius), and Charlie (the strongest boy in town) as they attempt to deal with life as unappreciated boy detectives.  Basically what seems like a played out concept (the wannabees becoming heroes), but somehow rendered in a way that was completely original and amazing.

The movie itself covers the spectrum of Derrick’s comedy pretty well, ranging from the disgusting/off the wall (vomiting up dog urine) to the dark and bizarre (let’s just say the entire time they are in the strip club).  I was also surprised at their ability to keep the story from getting dull or dragging, and keeping you engaged in an absurd story about mystery solving teens which shows uber potential for getting bogged down in stupid jokes and an attempt to force the plot.

I’m not gonna lie, for some reason, I became “that guy” during this movie, exploding with laughter and the occasional “ooooohhhhhhhhhh” whenever the mood struck me, it was a rather cathartic experience.

What really made me laugh though was the cavalcade of unappreciated NBC actors who were in this movie aside from just Derrick alum Donald Glover (aka Troy from Community),  also featured were Aubrey Plaza (aka April from Parks and Recreation) as Kelly, the damsel in distress, Ellie Kemper (aka Blowjob Girl aka Erin from the Office) as Jamie, the Mystery Team’s not quite right sidekick, and Bobby Moynihan (aka “not Horatio Sanz” on SNL) as Jordy, the sad pathetic shop clerk.  There were also cameos from both Lutz and Dot Com as Frank “that guy” at a party who also just beat cancer, and the strip club bouncer respectively.

Sadly we didn’t find out about it until we were already in the theater, that if we had seen the movie twice, we could join THE SWORD CLUB, which involved getting a foam sword.  Had I had more time, I would have gladly joined the sword club.

But aside from how awesome the movie was, what was super crazy was what happened after.  While walking home from the movie, we found a perfectly working 22-inch television, a microwave, and a bag full of 20 lacross helmets.  Christmas came early in New York.

Clearly, you all need to go see this movie, then have outstandingly good luck on your walk home.  The magic is there.

Oh so many jokes to make about Michael and the sword club. Which he has joined many, many times, if you know what I mean.
