Andrew W.K.’s 55 Cadillac, or: If a person working for a musician gives me their album, I will review it
by Michael
My good friend Lou “Goob” Guberti has recently secured a job working for Mr. W.K.’s label, and as such has given me a free copy of Mr. W.K.’s newest album, with the provision, that I review it, and let the internet know that I reviewed it.
Here is said review:
When I first heard that Andrew W.K. was making an album that was all just him sitting at a piano, jamming, what I expected was something closer to his other works revolving around parties, what I got was something different.
The entire album is simply Mr. W.K. tickling the ivories as he sees fit, with great skill and musicality. The songs rarely peak, but instead keep a mellow vibe the entire time, almost to the point of getting boring, or falling into the background. The saving graces for the album are the two final songs, “Car Nightmare” and “Cadillac” which both have a much more musical and inclusive tone, and seem to be actually composed, rather than W.K. simply plunking away at the piano. “Cadillac” even ends the album fittingly by supply breaking into a full fledged 30 second rock out, only to disappear just as quickly, ending with only a distorted, sustained “Cadillaaaaaac” before total silence.
In the end, the album is pretty forgettable, for both fans of Mr. W.K. and people who like some good free-form piano, but at the same time, it does what it set out to do. The album proves Andrew W.K. isn’t just a guy who hits himself in the face with bricks and goes crazy at the mention of the word party, he is a classically trained musician who, if need be, can play a damn competent piano.
