Songs for Pride Week

June 9, 2009

by Katie

I thought I’d missed the chance to post this, until I found out that all week is Pride Week in DC. If you live in Ward 1, make sure to vote in the straw poll on allowing marriage equality in DC tonight. I don’t have a DC license, and I’m not registered to vote here, but I’ll at least be there in support even if they don’t let me vote vote. Here are some songs you can listen to on the metro on your way there, or to the parade, or a big gay happy hour, or whatever!

The Folky: Mara Levi – The Homo Song

The Subtle: Beirut – Cliquot

The Not-So-Subtle: Yelle – Les Femmes

(Subtitled, so you don’t just have to take my word for it.)

The One For GenderQueer Kids: Antony and the Johnsons – For Today I Am a Boy

The Prayer: Rufus Wainwright – Gay Messiah

The Political: Nellie McKay – Cupcake

Did I miss any? Probably. Leave ‘em in the comments.

What about “On the Bus Mall” for the prostitutes?

Is that about gay prostitutes? I wanted the Decemberists on here, but their songs are SO HETERONORMATIVE. Also, everyone always dies.

I’m actually surprised you didn’t says “Jarvis Cocker” by WSC, which I was supposed to put on this list and then forgot. Or what’s that Sufjan Stevens one about being in love with the kid who gets stung by a bee? Or something?
