New For Friday Triple Feature to Support WXPN.
by Michael
As Kate said forever ago, and I said just last week, WXPN is by far the best radio station in Philadelphia. Not only does it offer an eclectic selection of music for all types all day long, it also saved Y-100 and made it available as Y-Rock online, and on the radio from 8-11. XPN even runs The World Cafe Live, one of the best concert venues in the city (suck it, Unitarian Church). But it is a public radio station, and it’s struggling. If you live in the area, or just super love to support independent music, stop over and make a donation. Here is a sample of the new music it has dropped on my face this week:
The Capitol Years – “You Can Stay There”
With a strong, hollow sound reminiscent of Echo and the Bunnymen or The Smiths, these Philly boys show a lot of promise. I’m not sure what a witch siccing a bear on a lumberjack has to do with the song, but still.
Doves - “Kingdom of Rush”
As soon as I heard these guys, I was enraptured. They’re a pretty moody band, yes, but in a super good way. The piercing music, highlighted with a simple piano, overlapping the quiet lyrics is really a master stroke that suits the whole tone of the song perfectly.
Harlem Shakes – “Sunlight”
I mean, c’mon, do I even have to talk these guys up? They are super danceable, with upbeat music and lyrics. If you don’t like these guys, you are probably a communist, and hate America too.
When my new computer gets here (squee!) the first thing I’m buying from iTunes is the Harlem Shakes album.
