People Who Look Like Shakespeare

March 10, 2009

by Katie

Yesterday, the (maybe) only portrait of William Shakespeare painted during his life was unveiled! Prepare to be shocked. Did you think Shakespeare looked like this?

We're wearing the same tights, Bill!

We're wearing the same tights, Bill!

False! It turns out he looked way less Aryan, and way more not-cartoon-like.

Wouldst thou hit that?

Wouldst thou hit that?

Historians really need to work on telling us the important things. Like, was Shakespeare a hot guy for his time? Did he give all the ladies the vapors? If we’re gonna objectify Martha freaking Washington, I expect it to go both ways.

After the jump, I compile a list of people who bear an uncanny resemblance to the Bard.

Christopher Lee (Thanks to Mikey for this one!)

Queen Elizabeth I. Also, anyone whose portrait was painted in the early 1600s.

This guy from “Shakespeare in Love.” If this is the modern equivalent of Shakespeare in terms of attractiveness, we can probably assume Bill was a stud.

Bret McKenzie, Flight of the Conchord and noted troubador.

Me with a beard and no bangs.

Am I the punchline of my most hilarious blogs? (Apparently.)

Feel free to psychoanalyze me, or to name other Shakespeare l0ok-alikes in the comments!

That’s what I was going for!! That photo was taken about 25 gelatos into our trip around Italy. I decided I wasn’t lactose intolerant on vacation. The beard, though, I’d been working on for months. Robust!

I have to say I had the same reaction as Gimmy. The gelato is the key prop. MMMMMM, gelato.

Were you the one I was telling about aptonyms? (Who else do I talk to?) Joseph Fiennes = aptonym.

Also, you look a lot like Bret with that beard.

Yes, you were telling me about aptonyms and Oliver Fox.

You should see me when I wear my red sweatshirt with forks on it, and jeans. I am creepily Bret-like.

Oh, and I laughed out loud twice. Once on the portrait caption and once at your face.

I think I was trying to frown when I made that face, because it was the last gelato I’d be getting in Italy.
